VANCOUVER- Canada won its opening two matches in team play on Thursday at the boccia World Cup
Boccia is a sport similar to lawn bowls and played by athletes with cerebral palsy. This year’s World Cup is also a qualifying tournament for the 2008 Paralympic Games.
In the team event, the Canadians opened the round robin with a 10-3 victory over Slovakia then beat Kuwait 14-0. The Canadian team members are Tammy McLeod of London, Ont., Adam Dukovich of Mississauga, Ont., Francine Desrochers of Montreal, Hanif Mawji of Burnaby, B.C., and Brock Richardson of Brampton, Ont.
‘’We had a great day and stuck to our game plan,’’ said McLeod. ‘’We are very happy with the outcome. We did probably better than expected and to be +21 in the goal differential is also very big for us. Our next game against New Zealand with be another big test.’’
In the three’s competition, Paul Gauthier of Vancouver, who won the singles title here on Tuesday, Alison Kabush of Surrey, B.C., and Monica Martino of Vancouver opened with a 5-4 victory over Japan then lost 9-1 to Greece.
In pairs, Jonathan Poulin of Laval, Que., and Joashua Vander Vies of Sarnia, Ont., were also 1-1 losing to the Czech Republic 4-2 then defeating Japan 3-1.
