Montreal Named Host City for 2009 Americas Cup of Boccia

The Association québécoise de sports pour paralytiques cérébraux (AQSPC), in partnership with the Canadian Cerebral Palsy Sports Association, is proud to announce that Montreal will be the host city for the 2009 Americas Cup of Boccia, October 24-29th, 2009.

Last week, Alan Dickson, president of the Cerebral Palsy International Sports and Recreation Association (CPISRA), announced that Montreal will be the host city for this important international event. The CCPSA, with provincial partner AQSPC, is very proud of this vote of confidence from CPISRA.

Sandy Hermiston, CCPSA president, congratulated the organizing committee for securing the event. She said she believes that with AQPSC’s track record of successfully hosting high quality competitions in the past, and the recent growth and development of boccia in the province, the organizing committee will do an excellent job on this event.

This competition, like other continental cups held in 2009, is the most important international boccia competition in the post-paralympic year. It offers athletes in the Americas countries the chance to see who the best boccia players in the next Paralympic cycle will be.

For the AQPSC, being awarded this competition is recognition of the province’s technical knowledge and presents people involved with boccia in Quebec with an important opportunity to gain international event experience. It will also be an opportunity for developing boccia players to see the best athletes in the region at home and to learn the techniques and strategies that make champions. For the Canadian players, the chance to have home field advantage will no doubt help their performances.

The competition will be held at the Palais de Congres and the host hotel is the Holiday Inn Select. Holding the event in the centre of Montreal will allow visitors to discover the charms and cultural wealth of our city.

Boccia (a precision sport similar to petanques or lawn bowls) is the sole sport for people with severe disabilities in the Paralympic games. The AQSPC is the provincial sport association responsible for the promotion and development of physical activity and sport for people with cerebral palsy or similar disability in Quebec. Our objective is to allow athlete to realize their dreams to the highest summit.
