Competition over for Canada at the 2006 Boccia World Championships

(Ottawa, October, 14 2006) The Canadian BC3 team lost a close 4-3 game against Portugal, putting an end to their run for a medal during the second last day of the 2006 Boccia World Championships, being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Paul Gauthier, Alison Kabush and Monica Martino, all from the greater Vancouver area, gave a valiant effort in their last game. Leading 3-1 after three ends, the Canadians watched the Portuguese pull an incredible shot to score three points in the last end. “Even with this defeat in the fourth end, we still proved we are one of the best teams in the world,” said National Team Head Coach, Mario Delisle. “We finished in 5th position at this Championship and now we turn our heads to the 2007 World Cup in Vancouver”.

Delisle is also satisfied with the performance of the BC4 Pair and the BC1/BC2 Team: “in the BC4 Category, people have noticed us, and we are happy with our 8th position. We will be even better next year in Vancouver”, said Delisle. “The BC1/BC2 team has grown a lot during this competition and we will now work on our short comings for the 2007 World Cup”

The finals will be played on Sunday.

Boccia is a Paralympic sport open to athletes with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke or similar non-progressive conditions. All competitors compete in wheelchairs and some are permitted to use assistive devices (usually a ramp or chute to aid in throwing the ball). Only athletes with a severe disability are eligible to compete in boccia.

The Canadian Cerebral Palsy Sports Association (CCPSA) is an athlete focused national organization administering and governing sport opportunities targeted to athletes with CP and related disabilities. CCPSA and its provincial partners cooperate as a proactive force to facilitate the development of equitable and fair sporting opportunities for our athletes.
